Gable ladder

This frame contains the default settings for gable ladders. Gable ladders are non-structural elements that can be used to create an overlap of the roof plane over the gable. In gable ladders, the timber members are oriented in the vertical direction (the height and width of the section are interchanged) and no nail plates are inserted in the joint. The basic characteristic of a gable ladder is the thickness, which should match the rafter depth in the roof structure. This can be entered in the "Width of ladders" field.

According to the design, two basic types can be distinguished: "Basic" and "With intermediate noggins":

Basic

A simpler type of gable ladder where the internal elements are oriented perpendicular to the slope of the roof plane. The advantage of this design is that all infill elements act as a cantilever, so larger overlaps over the gable can be resolved using this type. The disadvantage is that the infill elements are oriented differently from the top chords of conventional trusses. This needs to be addressed when installing the roofing, for example by the use of counter-battens.

For this type, only the "horizontal noggins spacing" is specified.

type "Basic"

With intermediate noggins

This type of gable ladder has a more complex shape, the infill elements are arranged in two different perpendicular directions. The aim is to obtain an arrangement of infill elements that has the same orientation as the top chords of conventional trusses. The disadvantage of this type is that fewer elements are arranged in the direction perpendicular to the gable and the load capacity of the gable ladder in this direction is limited.

type "With intermediate noggins"

The following parameters are specified for this type:

Length of inner bay - centre lines

  • Distance between infill elements placed perpendicular to the roof pitch in the internal sections. By default, the field is not filled in and the program tries to automatically calculate the distance so that the infill elements in the perpendicular and parallel direction have the same length.

Length of inner bay - centre lines

  • The distance between infill elements placed perpendicular to the roof pitch in the outermost sections. By default, the item is not filled in and the program tries to automatically calculate the distance so that the infill elements in the direction perpendicular to the slope are twice as long as the elements in the parallel direction.

Number of intermediate noggins

  • The number of infill elements in the pitch direction of the roof that are inserted between the outer rafters of the ladder
